SMS 2013

Second annual collaboration with the Midwest Young Artists (MYA).

2013 participants included the Young Scholars Jess  Larsen, Kate Xintong Lee, Charlie Liu,  Jonathan Jun Yang, Derek Wang, and a guest participant, William Chen. Together with the MYA orchestra,  under the direction of conductor and Artistic Director, Dr. Allan Dennis, they performed  Beethoven’s  Piano Concerto No. 3 in c-minor, Op. 37 and  Piano Concerto No. 20 in d-minor, K. 466  at the  Jay Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park as part of the The Grant Park Summer Classical Concert Series.

The Summer Music Summit is not only an experience in music education, but also allows students to build friendships. One of the Young Scholars, Jess  Larsen, was excited to see the friends he had made in the previous year’s summit, and had an unfortunate accident while running to greet them. Jess  tripped, fell and injured his left hand, preventing him from performing the assigned second movement of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto.  Another Scholar, Charlie, stepped in and proposed that he would play the left hand’s part so that they could perform the movement together.  Jess  and Charlie practiced all week to get their hands in-sync and in the end, Jess, who worked diligently all summer to prepare for the concert, got to perform  with the help of a colleague.
