More About this Scholar
Derek Wang has performed in several prestigious concert venues across the country and taken lessons with many of the world’s finest pianists, including Lang Lang. Derek showed innate musicality at an early age and began piano lessons at age five with Mrs. Dorothy Shi. Currently, he studies at the Pre-College Division of the Juilliard School, majoring in piano under the tutelage of Matti Raekallio. Since 2011, he attends the Aspen Music Festival and School, studying with Veda Kaplinsky.
Derek was selected as a scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation when he was ten years old and performed at the foundation’s inaugural concert in New York City’s Town Hall. Together with Lang Lang and fellow young scholars, Derek has played works for four, six, and eight hands at Carnegie Hall and across the country, including performances at the groundbreaking YouTube Symphony concert and on the Oprah Winfrey show in 2009.
At age thirteen, Derek collaborated with Academy Award-winning producer Hugh Welchman, performing the etudes of Chopin live for the U.S. premiere of the animated film “Magic Piano.” The stop-motion masterpiece, shot in 3D, is set to the music of Chopin’s etudes, translating them into a touching story. The event took place as part of the New York International Children’s Film Festival at Lincoln Center in March 2012. Later that year, Derek performed Chopin’s F-minor Concerto with Allan Dennis and the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra in the Pritzker Pavilion of Chicago’s Millennium Park. The concert culminated a week-long music summit between the Lang Lang Foundation and Midwest Young Artists.
As a young scholar of the Lang Lang Foundation, Derek is committed to the mission of attracting and inspiring young classical music lovers and performers. He actively participates in events that promote the education and spread the awesomeness of classical music, as well as fundraising activities for good causes. In collaboration with VH1, Derek has performed at the Anderson School in New York City to celebrate and encourage music education in our nation’s public schools. Other highlights include a Lang Lang & Friends public concert for children in Preston Bradley Hall at the Chicago Cultural Center. To be able to contribute to the society through the power and beauty of music is Derek’s goal.
Derek lives near Boston with his parents and older brother and goes to the Rivers School in Weston, MA. He enjoys baseball games and Formula 1 races, and is also an avid fan of Star Wars.
